image     Apple Crisp
                    Ooh La La!

Everyone loves a potluck, right?!?
Well, a number of years ago (when I was still single) I went to one.  Looking for an easy recipe, I made up an apple crisp for the occasion.  Everything was going OK until I noticed that one of the gentlemen at our table was poking through the apple crisp I made without really eating it.  I asked him what was wrong.

"Did you make this?" he asked.
"Yes...what's wrong with it?  I said.
"It's very interesting.  What spices did you use?" he asked as he took another very small nibble.

I decided to taste it myself.  Well, needless to say it was quite awful and very embarrassing.  Through humour and considerable contemplation from everyone at our table, I realized that I had used the spice cloves rather than cinnamon.

To this day, I really dislike potlucks.  When I attend one I rarely bring something I have made myself unless I taste it first.  And I eat with caution because you never know what might be lurking on the dessert table.

  1. LOL! Many years ago I brought Salsa and chips to a BBQ. I opened the salsa, put it in a mason jar and passed it off as my own homemade Salsa.

This is still a family joke, as I ended up marrying the man who's BBQ it was.

  2. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I made apple crisp for the family Thanksgiving dinner years ago and used salt instead of sugar. I was in a hurry and have matching canisters--that's my excuse. Fifteen years later and they still insist that I just bring (store bought) rolls or napkins as a contribution to the annual meal.

  3. I went to a pot luck once and brought 25 McDonald's cheesburgers.

What can I say? I was a student...
